Artist Statement

Art, for me, is the act of expressing ideas regardless of the medium
and sharing them with others. I see things and am compelled to create
with them. I also love to encourage viewers to interact with my art
and put their imprint on the work. Creating 3D sculptural forms and
textile “paintings” using new and found materials is a passion.

“Too often we become spectators of life instead of creating
life.”

Feedback from my silk dyeing class at the Houston
Int’l Quilt Festival 2006

(Catherine shared this success after seeing me again at Houston in 2007)

“I’m sure you remember our conversation! I’m being
facetious as there were over 500 ladies at the sampler.(Samplers
in Houston are very large workshops where there may be 30 -
50 teachers and hundreds of people. Each person sampling a teacher’s
technique for a few minutes and then going around to the next
teacher.)

“Just in case you’ve forgotten , I dyed a silk scarf at
last year’s sampler & was so impressed with everything that
I bought a package of the dyes to take with me to the Czech
Republic. I volunteer in the Czech Republic teaching English
for several weeks each year and try to take some new craft idea
to use with the children of the church. The family I live with
has a 16 year old daughter who’s attending an art school in
Brno, and is talented in so many areas. I figured she would
love to dye some silk.

“Because I’m a volunteer & have to earn my money for
all of the trips (traveling expenses as well as supplies), one
lady in Houston gave me a huge amount of silk. She had an online
business that she closed and invited my sister’s guild to come
to her house & purchase what inventory she had left. I went
with my sister to purchase fabric, the lady learned of the purpose
for my purchase, and proceeded to give me pounds & pounds
of silk. The quality of the fabric was much heavier & not
as nice as the scarves you had, but nevertheless, it was silk.

“One Sunday afternoon I invited several of the Czech girls
to my “home” after church. Each chose their fabric
and told me (in English) the color of dyes they wanted. They
ended up with some very unusual methods, besides the spraying,
twisting mounds, dotting, etc. that you showed us. Before it
was over, each girl had used some of every color. They were
all so proud of their accomplishment and proceeded over the
next week to turn their pieces of silk into table cloths, scarves,
etc.

“The silk that I had left was given to some of the Czech
ladies I’ve been helping teach to quilt & you wouldn’t believe
their joy. It was the first time any of them had ever had real
silk to work with. They can’t even find any cotton fabric, so
this silk was really special.

“Again, thanks for teaching me a quick lesson that worked
its way around the world. I hope the other ladies who’ve taken
this sampler with you have spread their new knowledge with others,
just as you shared with us.

“God bless you and keep up the good dyeing!!!!!”

Feedback from a new dyeing student

January 28th, 2010

“So i’ve had a chance to play with my new dyes and thought i’d give you some feedback after all your help and encouragement.

“First, i LOVE how wonderful it is to work with them. I love the complete lack of the “tar baby” effect that’s so annoying when i work with paint. The workspace stays clean, the fabric can fold back on itself without worry. There’s nothing dripping on the floor, i don’t have to use up a lot of space keeping stuff spread out while it’s drying, etc. and they’re better than other dyes, too – just one step – dilute with water. They are really phenomenal. Of course, you already know that. What can i say? I think it’s very exciting.

“I’m really giving my color theory studies a road test with mixing colors. It’s so wonderful to be able to experiment so quickly. Your notes about the colors are right on.

“I’m planning a quilt that looks like an antique map and i was able to get a vintage khaki-ish sepia color that i’m very pleased with. It’s very exciting.

“I’ve been surprised at how far the little bottles go. It seems like i’ve done a good bit of experimenting and i keep expecting to look down and see that the bottles are low – and they’re not.

“Feel free to quote me. this stuff is wonderful. i ordered more silk last night and keep coming up with more things i want to try with it.

“Thanks again for all your help,”

10 Color Dye Kit – $50.00

January 28th, 2010

These are the easiest, fastest liquid dyes I have ever used. Light to dark colors are possible. No heat is required to set the dyes. They are PERMANENT WHILE WET. Super concentrated. About 20-30 drops of dye mixed in 2 ounces of tap water for a medium color. Can be applied with plastic pour bottles, spray bottles, paint brushes, sponges, etc. creating a variety of effects. Use with silk, linen, wool or rayon, but they are not permanent on cotton. Results vary depending on the texture and content of your fabric. Can be used to overdye fabrics that have already been dyed, thus recycling your textiles. Use gloves to simplify the clean up. Great for kid’s projects, such as hand-dyed silk scarves for Mother’s Day gifts, Father’s Day handkerchiefs, painted pillowcases and purses.

The kit includes 10 colors: Canary, Goldenrod, Pumpkin, Scarlet, Magenta, Electric Blue, Turquoise, Emerald Green, Brown, and Black (½ ounce each); 2 pipettes for mixing colors, 1 silk scarf for dying, 2 gloves, 2 baggies, a silk catalog and an 8-page instruction booklet with 16 techniques for dying and surface design.

PLEASE NOTE: All the dyes MUST be mixed with water before use. You can use small bottles or the bottle kit below, which has flip tops and spray tops for various techniques.

Hand-Dyed Silk Scarf Demo at Craft Art

“Thank you. Once again your hand dyed scarf demo was a HUGE success! You are a pleasure to work with and the patrons loved the experience. Your support of Florida Craftsmen and [the] Craft Art [show] are truly appreciated.”

You are the Best!

Spray Dyeing with Stencils

Color Play with Silk: The Basics
Class Description — Explore the basics of learning to apply color to silk with instant setting dyes. You will be amazed at how easy it to create designs on luxurious silk fabrics ending in an array of accessories — a silk pouch, a cosmetic bag, a designer shawl, a sheer gift bag and a silk greeting card. Feedback on My Silk Dyeing Class

“I would like to thank you again for the opportunity to take the silk dying class. I have been raving about it. Thank you. It was wonderful. You are so patient and thorough – great teacher attributes! You are patient, organized, thorough and creative. I was amazed at the complete folder full of samples, order forms for supplies and information that accompanied the class. I look forward to your next workshop!”

Sincerely,
Tana Harper

Collage and 3D Effects Workshop
Class Description — Explore personal design ideas using monochromatic colors in a small format along with adding 3D effects (floral sheers, embellishments, dimensional fabric).

Feedback from My Collage Workshop

“The workshop you gave was wonderful. I have a great deal of awe for your planning, organization and the materials you arranged and gave us to work with…so thorough and generous.

“I made 7 [collages] from the materials in yellow. What I saw is that in addition to these techniques and skills, you have a great deal of knowledge and sense of the colors and how they live with each of them. Yellow was a challenge and yet, since each color has a value, there must be a challenge in each of them.

“Something wonderful happens when you enter the color itself and you have a great deal to share on this I am sure.”

Warmly,
Barbara

Finger Knitted Scarves
Class Description — Quickly and rapidly make narrow, fluffy scarves or belts using just four fingers, one strand of plain yarn and one strand of eyelash (or fluffy) yarn. This technique is faster than knitting. I learned it from one of my 3rd grade art students!

Dyeing Doorways with Doilies
Class Description — Walk through a new doorway and experiment making your own fabric with doorway images using plastic doilies, paper or plastic shapes, spray colors, silk fabric and instant setting dyes. Sooooooooo EASY!
